Savoca, dating back to the 12th century, is a municipality in the province of Messina and its name is due to the elder trees that grow here in quantity.
Visit:
The Church of Saint Mary in the Sky Assunta, national monument built in 1130.
Saint Nicolò Church, also called Saint Lucy Church, whose 15th century bust is in the façade.
Saint Michele Church, built in the 15th century, and its 17th century pulpit.
The town is famous for 18th and 19th centuries embalmed corpses of magnates kept in the crypt of the church and also because it was the location of many successful films, i.e. Francis Ford Coppola's "Il Padrino" (The Godfather) in 1972.
