Messina is the "door" of Sicily and is also called "Zancle", scythe, for the particular form of its port, which is the first destination for the tourist who goes to Sicily.
Visit
The Cathedral and its portals, the 14th-century aspersorium, sculptures of the chancel, and also the Baldachin, the major altar, apsidal mosaics and the Sacrament chapel.
The
bell tower, holds one of the largest astronomical clocks in the world, built in 1933 by the Ungerer Company of Strasbourg. The belfry mechanically animated statues, which illustrate events from the civil and religious history of the city every day at noon, are a popular touristic attraction.
The
Fountain of Orion, located next to the Cathedral, and built by Montorsoli, represents Orion's triumph, who is the mythical founder of the city. It has a pyramidal structure, with Orion at the top, putti, naiades and tritons lower down, four statues representing four rivers, one of them feeding the fountain in the lower part. Around the fountain there are eight sea monsters in black stone.
The
Regional Museum houses Civic Museum's collections, notable paintings by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina and many remains from destroyed churches and buildings.
