Grande Albergo Maugeri. Riviera Dei Ciclopi (Cyclops Coast): Acicastello And Acitrezza
ACICASTELLO
The little town is called "Aci-Castle" because of the presence of a castle built by the Normans in 1076 on a basaltic rock dating back to the earliest submarine eruptions of Mount Etna. The castle, which at that time was joined to the mainland by a drawbridge, was built in lava stone and has the solid appearance of a fortified and towered building above the sea. It houses the Museum of Mineralogy, Paleonthology and Archaeology. Going up the stairs you can admire the hinterland landscape and also the nearby cliffs of Acitrezza.
ACITREZZA
Acitrezza, the picturesque village of Acicastello where Verga set his masterpiece "I Malavoglia" in 1800 and Visconti shot "La terra trema" (the earth trembles) in 1948, is a fishing village that thrives on fishing and on FishingTourism. By boat you can visit the sea of Acitrezza where the cliffs (the stones thrown by the Cyclops Polyphemus against Ulysses' ship, as the myth tells) and the Lachea isle, nowadays a nature reserve, from the top of which you can admire a wonderful view, rise.
You can enjoy the
"FishingTourism" experience in S. Maria La Scala: a fishing day or night with a tasting of freshly caught squids and fish.
