Grande Albergo Maugeri. Agrigento

The city of Agrigento was founded in 581 BC by geloi settlers and Pindaro defined it "the most beautiful city of mortals". It's in a wonderful position overseeing the Acropolis hills, Atene's cliff, the Girgenti and the temples' hills.
Who visits Agrigento should see the archaeological site of "Valley of the Temples", included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the monuments of the modern city.
There are many temples in the Valley:
Temple of Juno, built in the 5th century BC, lies in the highest part of the Greek city and is very big measuring 41m x 20m. It was used for the celebration of weddings. A story tells that if a lamb got wet and shivered the wedding wasn't good so that it wasn't celebrated. Opposite the temple there are the remains of the altar which was used for sacrifices.
Temple of Concordia is the symbol of the Valley of the Temples and when the sunset lights it you can see a unique sight. It was built in the 5th century BC. Turned into a Christian church dedicated to SS Peter and Paul by the Bishop Gregorio in 597 AD, it is now one of the best preserved in the Valley.
Temple of Hercules was built in the 6th century and is the oldest temple of the Valley. It was destroyed by an earthquake and only in 1920s the 8 columns you can see today were rebuilt.
Temple of Jupiter is one of the biggest constructions of the Greek architecture measuring 112m x 56m. Its construction started in 480 BC to celebrate the city-state's victory over Carthage, but it never ended. It is characterized by the use of large size atlases, called Telamoni, that seem to support the weight of the structure above them across their shoulders, as the mythological Atlas was condemned by Jupiter to support the weight of the globe because he sided with the Titans.
Temple of the Dioscuri, dated to the 4th century, includes only four columns and a part of the treabeation, rebuilt in the 19th century.

In the modern city visit:
The Cathedral, built in the 11th century, consists of various styles, as you can see in the 14th century bell tower, the Arabic-Norman two-colours embellishments of the big window and the typical Baroque balcony. Inside you can see the 15th century wooden ceiling and Saint Gerlando's Gothic chapel.
Saint Spirit Abbey, a Medieval monument of the 13th century, which nowadays hosts the art gallery and the new Civic Museum of Agrigento.
Archaeological Museum of Sicily, the biggest museum of the middle-southern Isle. Here you can see above all finds of the period after the First World War. In one of the halls of the Museum you find the original Telamon, that supported a column of the majestic Temple of Jupiter.
The native house of Luigi Pirandello and his ashes buried under the pine tree.
